Choosing The Right Concret Mixer For Your Next Driveway Project

Blog

You are probably anxious to get started on your driveway project, but there are a few things to consider before settling on a concrete mixer. The following guide will help you determine the mixer that would be best suited for your next driveway project.

Mobility

The first thing to consider is whether you want to rent a stationary cement mixer or a mobile one. Stationary mixers are chosen for heavier jobs, as they can mix strong concrete mixes. The only issue is that stationary mixers require a more skilled or experienced hand.  But do not fret, because dealing with your driveway or walkway does not require heavy concrete mixes, and you can use a mobile concrete mixer.

Types of Concrete

The next thing that you need to consider is the type of concrete that you want to use, as there are several kinds. What makes each concrete mix different is their strength. But since you are working on your driveway or walkway, you can narrow down the choices.

Strength is measured by Pounds per Square Inch, or PSI. There are PSI ranges that extend far above 5000--these are usually used for extremely heavy jobs, meaning you don't have to worry about them.

You want to choose a mix between 2500 and 4500 PSI for your particular needs. 2500 PSI is strong enough and can be mixed easily, so the mixer you rent won't have to be extremely heavy-duty. 4500 PSI is much stronger and should be perfect if your driveway or walkway is highly trafficked or if you will be placing heavy items on top of the concrete. Be sure to rent a mixer that can mix this type of concrete without the use of much water, as excessive moisture degrades its quality.

Mixer

If you decide to use a mobile mixer, be sure to choose the right one, as there are several types. One common type is a mixer with a mechanical pump that uses pressure and water to easily pour the concrete into the desired location. This type of mixer does require more liquid, so be sure to plan accordingly, or purchase a concrete mix that has been formulated to work with mixers with mechanical pumps.

Talk to your concrete mixer specialist about other choices that you can consider before finding a concrete mixer for rent. As you can see, finding a concrete mixer for your project does take a little knowledge.
